Before you commission a piece of art a quick consideration of where you want to hang it would be good. There are many ways of placing artwork in your home, below are a few ideas.
- Consider your current colour scheme
- The size of the artwork you are wanting to commission
- The room or hallway it will hang in
- The height it is to be hung, with the main consideration been your viewing height.
When hanging artwork over a sofa or a bed the gap between the top of the sofa and bottom of the artwork should be between 6 to 10 inches.
This looks great with a large piece of artwork but not a good with a small one.

57 Inches Rule
This rule is based on the average eye height but should not be used without thought as it may be you are much taller or shorter and you are the main viewer, this might not work for you. The 57 inches rule is a good starting point and works for most.
The centre of the artwork should be 57 inches from the floor and when the same rule is used through out it can create a feeling of harmony.
Stand Out or Fit in
On a basic level do you want your artwork to stand out against your current interior design style or do you want it to blend in so its one of your 3 or 5 colours in your current room's style/
Pop of Colour in a neutral room
The artwork is the point of interest and brings life to your room.
Pop of Colour in a dark scheme
A splash of colour in a dark room breaks up the heaviness of the colour scheme, it brings the room to life.
Blends in with the scheme
Here the artwork is in the same colours as the room, adding warmth and character without standing out or detracting from the neutral scheme.
